Lyons Golf Sweeps Weekly Liberty League Awards

TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in golf and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Madi Mendiola and Caroline Rubino have been recognized. Mendiola was named the Performer of the Week, while Rubino was the Rookie of the Week honoree. Both helped the Lyons to a seventh-place finish at last weekend's Vassar Invitational.

A junior captain from San Diego, Calif., Mendiola finished fourth overall at Vassar with a score of 158. After shooting a 78 on day one, she concluded the event with a second round score of 80. Mendiola's effort also marked the fifth top-10 finish of the season through six events.

Mendiola has now garnered Liberty League Performer of the Week honors four times this season, including three during fall competition. Her last award during the fall season saw her finish third overall at the Williams Fall Invitational with a score of 154. She shot a 77 in both the First and Final Rounds to record her highest finish of the season thus far.

The former Rancho Bernardo High School standout, who has earned eight Liberty League Performer of the Week honors since the Lyons joined the conference in 2012, also had a fifth-place finish at the season-opening NYU Invitational, was sixth at the Middlebury Invitational and tied for ninth at Wellesley's Ann S. Batchelder Invitational last fall.

Rubino, a first year out of Mansfield, Mass., garnered her second weekly honor of the season after placing 15th overall and first among all league rookies at Vassar. After posting a day one score of 87, she rebounded on day two with a solid 79. For the weekend, Rubino recorded a combined total of 166.

It has been a strong first season for the Bishop Feehan High School graduate, who has finished top-20 in four out of five meets thus far. She opened the season with her first Rookie of the Week honor, placing 14th at NYU and also placed 13th overall at the Middlebury Invitational as the Lyons posted third overall as a team.

The golf team, which has been the recipient of every Rookie of the Week honor this season, returns to action this weekend as they compete in the Jack Leaman Invitational, hosted by Amherst. Action begins on Saturday in Amherst before concluding on Sunday at The Orchards, MHC's home course.
