Volleyball drops NEWMAC match to first-place Babson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Lauren Gips had 12 kills and no attack errors on 22 attempts to propel first-place Babson College to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) victory over the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team Tuesday night in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

The Beavers (16-1, 5-0 NEWMAC) won their 13th straight match despite a creditable performance by Mount Holyoke (8-8, 1-4 NEWMAC). Babson was held to its fourth-lowest attack percentage of the season (.154), while Mount Holyoke attacked at a .028 clip.

Gips also posted three service aces and four blocks for Babson, while Erin Gray had eight kills and a match-high 19 digs.

Sophomore Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) led Mount Holyoke with eight kills, while junior Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had five apiece. First-year Katie Frank (Prairieville, La.) had four kills with one error on 16 attempts (.188).

First-year Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a team-high 16 digs and sophomore Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had a match-high 20 assists.

The score was tied at 14-14 in the first set before Babson's 11-3 run gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Lulu McShane's kill clinched the set with Babson's third straight point.

A strong second set by Mount Holyoke had the score tied at 22-22 before the Beavers again scored three straight to take the set and a 2-0 lead. Gips had back-to-back kills before Gray's kill clinched it.

Mount Holyoke led 7-5 in the third set before Babson took over. Gips had kills on four straight points in the middle of a 10-1 run that gave the Beavers a commanding 15-8 lead, and the Lyons came no closer than within four points the rest of the way.

Mount Holyoke plays a non-conference match at Western New England University on Friday at 6pm.
