Volleyball falls in three close sets at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Madeline Barton had a match-high 13 kills in her eighth double-double of the season for the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team, but host Western New England University prevailed over the Lyons in a closely contested 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-23) non-conference match on Friday night.

Ella Souter had 10 kills on 23 attempts (.391) for the host Golden Bears (7-8), while Alissa Hawes had a team-high 11 kills. Isabelle Petty added seven kills with zero errors on 15 swings (.467) and Becca Mayer had a match-high 23 digs.

The Lyons (8-9) led as late as 13-12 in the first set and 22-21 in the second set, before the Golden Bears clinched the win by leading the third set wire to wire. WNEU attacked at a .171 percentage to Mount Holyoke's .096.

Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had 13 kills on 49 attempts with 10 errors (.061), adding 14 digs and two blocks. Sophomore Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) added seven kills on 17 attempts (.294) and junior Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) had six kills and 10 digs. First-year Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) posted a team-high 18 digs for the Lyons, and sophomore Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 33 assists.

WNEU inched within one match of Mount Holyoke in the teams' all-time series, rising to 8-9 against the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke returns to NEWMAC play at Wheaton College on Tuesday at 7pm.
