Emerson pulls away from volleyball for 3-0 NEWMAC victory

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Emerson College Lions attacked at the highest percentage by a Mount Holyoke opponent this season, at .288, en route to a convincing 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-11) victory over the host Lyons in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday night.

Rachel Dickerson had 14 kills on 28 attempts (.429), Amelia Combs aded 10 kills, and Parker Cummings had nine kills on 26 attempts (.346) for the visiting Lions (9-4, 1-2 NEWMAC). Maya Hall submitted six kills on 11 attempts (.455) and Emerson totaled seven team blocks in the win, led by four blocks from Isabella Cubba.

Sophomore Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had 10 kills to lead Mount Holyoke (7-6, 1-2 NEWMAC). Junior Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) posted six kills apiece, and sophomore Amelia Ringor (West Lafayette, Ind.) had a team-high 16 digs. Sophomore setter Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 22 assists, 13 digs and two kills.

The first set suggested a highly competitive match, with 11 tie scores and seven lead changes between the teams. Mount Holyoke took its last lead of the set at 20-19, and Emerson scored three of the final four points in the set, with kills by Brooke Maynez and Combs, and wrapped up with an ace served by Combs.

Emerson raced out to an 8-1 lead in the second set and cruised from there. The third set was not competitive, as Emerson rolled up a commanding lead of 16-3 en route to the win.

Mount Holyoke next plays a tri-match at MIT on Saturday, facing MIT at 12pm and Westfield State at 2pm.
