Volleyball defeats Westfield State to earn split at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomores Madeline Barton and Elle Rimando combined for 34 kills as the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team defeated Westfield State 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon, evening their record for the day at 1-1 following a 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-20) loss to tri-match host MIT.

Mount Holyoke (8-7, 1-3 NEWMAC) will host a NEWMAC match against Babson on Tuesday at 7pm.

Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had a season-high 21 kills while hitting at a sparkling .383 percentage with 12 digs, while Rimando added 13 kills on .333 hitting and three service aces, as the Lyons regained their winning record at 8-7.

First-year Katie Frank (Prairieville, La.) posted 10 kills on .269 attacking, to go with three blocks in the win. Sophomore Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 44 assists in the match and first-year Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a team-high 19 digs.

Lauren Carnes led Westfield State (1-13) with 12 kills, and Bridgette McAndrews produced 10 kills and a match-high 23 digs.

The host Engineers (12-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) pounced on Mount Holyoke in the early going, winning the first set 25-9 as they hit at a .429 clip and held the Lyons to .000 attacking. The Lyons played closer with the Engineers in the second and third sets, but MIT maintained control throughout the match.

Consecrata Rozario had a match-high 10 kills for MIT with no errors on 16 attempts (.625). Lauren Keller added nine kills with one error on 24 attempts (.333).

Barton led Mount Holyoke with six kills on 26 swings (.192) to go with 10 digs. Sophomore Amelia Ringor (West Lafayette, Ind.) had a team-high 14 digs.
