Track & Field Posts Strong Effort at Massasoit Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College track & field team put forth an outstanding effort on Saturday afternoon, competing at the 2019 Massasoit Classic at Springfield College. The meet, which was a non-team scoring event, saw multiple top-five finishes, including a 1-2 finish in the mile.

In the 800-meter run, the Lyons saw a 3-4-5 finish as rookie Sydney Nash posted a season's-best time of 2:32.72 for third, followed by senior Emsie Cronin with a personal-best mark of 2:33.14 for fourth. Taking fifth was sophomore Simone Jacob, who crossed in a season's-best time of 2:33.34.

Jacob went on to claim victory in the 1-mile run, posting season's-best time of 5:33.14 and she was quickly followed by Nash, who also had a season's-best with a time of 5:34.54. The Lyons also saw rookies Natalie Rodman and Sophia Gronbeck go back-to-back finishing 11th (6:00.60) and 12th (6:00.66), respectively.

In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore sisters Hannah Rieders and Madeline Rieders posted fourth (10:55.59) and fifth (10:55.60), respectively with personal-best marks and BU Valentine Qualifying marks. Also in the 3k, senior Corrin Moss took eighth (11:14.97 - personal-best), while classmate Hannah Gershone posted ninth (11:19.65 - season's-best). In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Isabelle Wohlin was second overall with a New England Division III Qualifying time and season's-best mark of 9.78.

Rodman, junior Charleen Theroux and rookies Sarah Bishop and Michaela Phelan combined for fourth overall in the 4x400-meter relay. The group notched a time of 4:30.26.

In the field events, Theroux earned the victory in the long jump, posting a personal-best distance of 5.33 meters (17-06.00) - which was also a New England D3 Qualifying mark. Bishop finished well in the same event, taking 10th with a distance of 4.29 meters (14-01.00). In the triple jump, Theroux once again was outstanding, taking third overall. She notched a personal-best distance of 10.21 meters (33-06.00), while in the weight throw, senior Julia Hecking was fourth with a personal-best distance of 13.27 meters (43-06.50).

Following competition, the squad selected their weekly awards as Theroux was named the Field Athlete of the Week, Wohlin earned Runner of the Week and rookie Sarah Hyde was tabbed as the Teammate of the Week.

 

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Friday as select individuals compete at the BU Valentine Invite. The squad is also in action on Saturday at the Gordon Kelly Invitational at MIT on Saturday.
