SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Hannah Rieders became Mount Holyoke's first All-Conference in track & field since the 2015 season as the Lyons competed at the 2019 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday. MHC took seventh overall, recording an impressive 47 points on the day, as three student-athletes earned medalist honors for finishing in the top three in their events. MIT won this year's meet with 182.50 points.
Opening the day with a NEWMAC title was Hannah Rieders (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), who won the 10000-meter event with a time of 39:46.07. She becomes the first Lyon since Camille Coklow '16 to earn All-Conference First Team did it in the 100-meter dash in 2015. Her sister, Madeline Rieders (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) was close behind in second-place, garnering All-Conference Second Team recognition with a time of 39:51.14. Also finishing strong in the 10k was senior Hannah Gershone (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) as she earned eighth overall with a time of 40:37.79, while junior Michelle Serrano (Los Angeles, Calif./West Adams Preparatory) was 12th with a personal-best mark of 42:48.40.
In the 4x100m relay, the Lyons powered their way to eighth overall with a time of 56.10. Comprising the relay were first years Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J./Summit), Leah Pendl-Robinson (Branford, Conn./Branford), Michaela Phelan (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) and Natalie Rodman (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional).
Next up was the 3000-meter steeplechase, which saw first year Sophia Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) take 10th overall with a personal-best time of 12:27.54. Fellow rookie Amanda Kearney (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) was 14th (13:07.37), followed by sophomore Olivia Wrobleski (Fall River, Mass./Bishop Stang) in 15th (13:41.05 - PR) and first year Katie Milligan (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) in 16th (13:49.12 - PR).
The Lyons earned their third medal of the day in the 1500-meter as sophomore Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University HS) placed third with a personal-best time of 4:54.64. First year Sydney Nash (New Hartford, Conn./Enfield) was next across in seventh with a mark of 5:02.11, followed by senior Emsie Cronin (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) in 19th with a time of 5:28.48.
Sophomore Isabelle Wohlin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) powered her way to 12th overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.25, while classmate Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya/Brookhouse International School) was 11th in the 100-meter dash with a PR time of 13.01.
Mukulu then paced the efforts in the 400-meter dash, crossing seventh with a personal-record time of 1:01.28. First year Sammi Craig (Austin, Texas/Hyde Park) was 21st with a PR time of 1:15.01, while senior Victoria Parrish (Pleasantville, N.Y./Buram Hills) was 22nd (1:16.10 - PR).
More outstanding efforts followed in the 800-meter run as senior Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Alternative HS) was fifth with a personal-record time of 2:23.66. Jacob was close behind in seventh with a personal-best mark of 2:27.61, while Nash crossed the line in 10th with a time of 2:29.08. Rodman concluded the solid efforts in the event, earning 18th overall (2:35.67).
In the 400-meter hurdles, Wrobleski was 13th with a time of 1:21.29, while Gronbeck and Kearney were 14th (1:22.70 - PR) and 15th (1:23.44), respectively.
The 200-meter dash saw Pendl-Robinson place 22nd with a time of 29.77, while Robb was close behind in 23rd with a mark of 30.22. Phelan earned 25th (30.87), followed by Cronin in 26th (31.19).
It was a fourth-place finish for Madeline Rieders as she crossed the line in 18:39.27 in the 5000-meter race. Her sister, Hannah was right behind her, earning fifth with a time of 18:39.36. First year Jamie Day (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) was 20th with a personal-best time of 19:50.53, while classmate Sarah Hyde (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) was 22nd (20:06.88).
The 4x400-meter relay rounded out the track events on the day as MHC earned seventh overall with a time of 4:17.56. Comprising that relay was Mukulu, Wohlin, Moss and Jacob.
In the field events, senior Julia Hecking (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) was 12th in the hammer throw with a mark of 38.08 meters (124-11). Junior Charleen Theroux (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) placed 14th in the javelin throw with a PR distance of 20.21 meters (66-04), while Pendl-Robinson earned 10th in the pole vault with a 2.20 meters (7-02.50).
Rounding out the efforts was Wohlin, who finished 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 9.89 meters (32-05.50).
At the conclusion of the meet, the squad selected its weekly honors. The Runner of the Week was Corrin Moss, the Field Athlete of the Week was Isabelle Wohlin, while the Teammate of the Week was Hannah Gershone.
Mount Holyoke returns to action next Friday and Saturday when qualified individuals head to Williams College for the New England Division III Championships.
