Swimming and Diving Takes On UMass Amherst at Home

South Hadley, Mass. - December 4, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team took on Division-I UMass Amherst on Saturday afternoon at the MHC Natatorium, as the Minutewomen prevailed over the Lyons, 212-101.

Saturday's meet marked the first time that Mount Holyoke College and UMass Amherst squared off in a swimming and diving meet since the 1991-92 season.

Opening up the day with the 200 medley relay, Mount Holyoke's top team of Adji Diouf (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Erin Schrama (Providence, R.I.), Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) and Callie Yosick (Portland, Ore.) produced a time of 2:01.91. Next was the 1000 freestyle, where Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) had the Lyons' top mark, touching in 12:00.98. 

Both Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) earned points for Mount Holyoke in the 200 freestyle, as Bushway posted a team-best time of 2:11.35, just ahead of Schneider's mark of 2:12.78. In the 100 backstroke, Diouf notched the Lyons' top time and produced a mark of 1:09.04. Senior Adrienne Corr (San Diego, Calif.) was Mount Holyoke's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:19.30, just edging teammate Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas) who produced a time of 1:19.83.

Heierhoff took third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:26.01 before Yosick turned in a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.01 seconds. Schrama was next in the 100 individual medley as the junior notched a time of 1:09.09 to finish fifth overall. Winning the 100 individual medley was UMass's Maggie Desmond, who turned in an MHC Natatorium record time of 1:01.88.

Schneider and Schrama were the Lyons' top performers in the 100 freestyle, as Schneider clocked in at 58.75 seconds and Schrama touched in 1:01.67. In the 200 backstroke, Yosick was second with a time of 2:26.69 and was the top finisher for Mount Holyoke. Next up was the 200 breaststroke, where Williams recorded a team-best 2:46.52.

Heierhoff posted Mount Holyoke's best time in the 500 freestyle, registering a time of 5:47.92, while Emily Tarinelli (Groton, Conn.) and Lauren Madsen (Ghent, N.Y.) earned points for the Lyons in the 100 butterfly, as Tarinelli clocked a 1:09.02 and Madsen finished in 1:09.86.

Wrapping up the meet, Williams notched a time of 2:28.24 in the 200 individual medley, while in the 200 freestyle relay, the Lyons' top team was Bushway, Schneider, Yosick and Williams, who combined for a time of 1:50.36.

On the diving boards, UMass's Emma Petrovich won both events while Kathryn Murphy (Fairport, N.Y.) was second on the one-meter with a mark of 257.91. On the three-meter, Murphy posted a score of 234.67 to take third overall. Petrovich's score of 288.82 on the one-meter and 287.11 on the three-meter were both MHC Natatorium records.

Mount Holyoke College will return to action on Tuesday, January 11 when the Lyons head to Trinity College for a tri-meet with the Bantams and Vassar College.
