Soccer takes 1-0 NEWMAC victory at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke sophomore Jenny Romero's first career goal carried the Lyons soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Clark University on Wednesday night.

Romero's (Belleville, N.J.) goal was the first the Lyons had scored against Clark since 2016, when the Lyons last defeated the Cougars; the win breaks a five-game losing streak against their NEWMAC rivals.

The goal occurred in the 32nd minute, as sophomore Sage Hudson (Washington, D.C.) carried the ball up the right sideline, then beat a Clark defender to send a low cross through the penalty area. Clark goalkeeper Anabella White, a defender and Mount Holyoke junior Emme Hackett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) converged on the ball, and it escaped past all three players to Romero, who got enough of her left foot on it to send the ball rolling into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The assist was Hudson's team-high second of the season.

Mount Holyoke (4-4-5, 1-4-3 NEWMAC) doubled its point total in the conference standings to six with the win; it's the Lyons' most conference points since 2016.

Clark (3-10-2, 0-6-2 NEWMAC) could not exploit its advantages in shots (13-6) and corner kicks (9-3).

Sophomore goalie Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) recorded her fourth shutout of the season, making four saves. White made one save for the Cougars.
