SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Yoshiko Slater scored with 3:44 remaining to lift Emerson College into a 1-1 tie with the Mount Holyoke College soccer team Saturday at the MHC Soccer field, spoiling the host Lyons' hopes for their first conference victory.
Emerson (1-4-4, 0-1-1 NEWMAC) had a 28-10 advantage in shots attempted in the game and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, but it was Mount Holyoke (3-1-3, 0-1-1) that was in position to win after sophomore Sage Hudson's (Washington, D.C.) goal in the 61st minute.
Hudson took a lead pass from senior Hannah Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.), carried into the penalty area and had her initial right-footed shot blocked by an Emerson defender. Hudson got her left foot onto the loose ball and drove the ball into the net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Lyons lead.
But in the 87th minute, Emerson graduate student Marissa Krenn made a move at the top right corner of the box to pass a defender, then delivered a perfect cross. Slater rushed to the goal, beating the Lyons defense and burying the game-tying goal despite protests from the Mount Holyoke side that Slater was offsides.
Mount Holyoke played generally strong defense in the game, weathering two injuries to key players along the way. Senior Avery Livingston (La Grange, Ill.) and junior Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) both played key roles in breaking up several Emerson attacks.
Mount Holyoke junior Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) made 10 saves in the game, while Emerson keeper Amara Schaub made four stops for the Lions.
The Lyons will next play a NEWMAC game at Salve Regina, Saturday Oct. 5 at 12pm. Emerson will host Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game the same day at 1pm.
