SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College soccer team and Wellesley College played to a 0-0 draw Wednesday night at the MHC Soccer Field in an evenly played battle of old rivals.
The tie gave both teams a point in the conference standings, while keeping Mount Holyoke (3-2-4, 0-2-2 NEWMAC) without a win in conference play. The draw also snapped a two-game winning streak for Wellesley (5-4-2, 1-2-1 NEWMAC) against Mount Holyoke.
Wellesley had a 12-8 advantage in shots, including 5-2 in the first half, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Only one shot by the Blue threatened the Lyons, when Kyra Narunatvanich kicked a blistering shot from the edge of the penalty area, which Mount Holyoke sophomore goalie Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) leaped to catch.
Mount Holyoke mounted its first big scoring chance with 11 minutes remaining in the game. With the Lyons on a counter-attack, sophomore forward Sage Hudson's (Washington, D.C.) shot in the penalty area was blocked by a Wellesley defender. Junior Emme Hackett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) jumped on the rebound but was met simultaneously by Wellesley goalie Sascha Fleesler, who made her first save of the game on the play.
Four minutes later, Wellesley escaped the biggest scoring chance of the game. With 7:20 remaining in regulation, a pass from Hackett to Hudson squeaked past Wellesley defender Mae Nephew, sending Hudson into a 1-on-1 breakaway showdown with Fleesler. Fleesler came out of the goal to deflect Hudson's touch, and with the ball rolling slowly towards the goal, Nephew caught up to it and kicked it away safely to preserve the 0-0 tie.
Fleesler had saves, both in the final 11 minutes, while Krieg had seven saves for Mount Holyoke in her third shutout of the season and the Lyons' fifth.
Mount Holyoke plays at Babson Saturday at 11am. Wellesley hosts Clark Saturday at 2pm.
