SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Ada Siepmann scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute and the Mount Holyoke College soccer team held on to defeat Western Connecticut State 1-0 on Wednesday night on the MHC Soccer Field, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany), who led the Lyons (2-0-0) in scoring last season, took the ball from the outside right corner of the penalty area, carried the ball along the top of the box and past three Wolves defenders, and struck a left-footed shot inside the near right post, to give the Lyons the lead with 39:32 remaining in the game.
In an evenly played game, WestConn (1-1-1) was outshot 10-6 in the first half but had a 15-7 edge in shots in the second half and 21-17 for the game, with seven on goal.
WestConn's Casey Papp blasted a 25-yard shot in the 83rd minute toward the upper right corner of the Lyons goal, but Mount Holyoke sophomore Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) made a leaping save. Krieg stopped a shot by Suzana Imetovski in the 85th minute to again preserve the lead.
First-year Ania McMichael (Glastonbury, Conn.) and the Lyons defense played smothering defense throughout the game against Imetovski, giving the Wolves' most potent scoring threat a difficult night.
Ashlyn Flood made five saves for WestConn. Krieg made seven saves to earn the shutout win.
Mount Holyoke next plays at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3pm. WestConn hosts the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Friday at 7pm.
