PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mount Holyoke junior midfielder Ada Siepmann scored on a free kick from long distance in the 82nd minute to carry the Lyons to a 1-0 victory at Rhode Island College on Monday night.
Mount Holyoke (3-0-2) is unbeaten five games into the season for the first time since at least 2005.
Setting up from 35 yards in front of the RIC goal, where junior Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) had drawn a foul by the Anchorwomen, Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany) lofted a high arcing kick that dropped over the head of RIC goalie Chloe Angelone, grazed the crossbar, hit the back of Angelone's leg and rolled into the goal for the go-ahead score.
Both of Siepmann's goals this season have decided 1-0 wins for the Lyons. She now has eight goals in her collegiate career.
RIC (4-3) had advantages in both shots (12-7) and corner kicks (2-0).
Junior captain Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) made five saves in the shutout win, in Govea's first start of the season. The Lyons have allowed only one goal through five games.
Angelone made three saves in taking the loss.
Mount Holyoke will open NEWMAC play on Saturday at 2pm, hosting the MIT Engineers.
