Wellesley pulls away from basketball with third-quarter run

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College broke away from a three-point game early in the third quarter with an 18-0 run to take over the game in a 61-41 NEWMAC win over Mount Holyoke on Saturday.

Wellesley (8-14, 3-6 NEWMAC) captured its second straight conference win behind 18 points from senior Caitlin Windross.

Ava Shane added 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for Wellesley, while Stacy Chen scored 11 points and Trinity Barrow posted eight steals and seven assists.

The Lyons (4-19, 0-9 NEWMAC) received 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals from sophomore Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.). Senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) also reached double figures with 10 points. Junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) tallied eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Lyons raced out to a 12-2 lead, with McGonagle and senior Katie Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) scoring five points each. The Blue answered to finish the quarter on an 11-4 run, to cut the margin to 16-13, with six points by Shane.

Wellesley opened the second with five straight points to take its first lead of the contest at 18-16. The Blue later trailed 21-20, but responded with a Proud Techarungchaikul trey and a Shane layup for a four-point lead. With time running down in the half, Barrow stole the ball in the backcourt and went in for a layup before the clock expired to give Wellesley a 28-23 lead at the break.

Mount Holyoke opened the second-half scoring with a layup underneath by sophomore Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.), but the Lyons were held scoreless for the remainder of the period, as the Blue finished with a decisive 18-0 run for a 46-25 lead going into the fourth.

In an evenly played final quarter, Wellesley continued to hold a comfortable lead throughout en route to the victory.

Mount Holyoke plays its last home game of the season Wednesday against Babson. The Lyons' home court in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium will have a new look next season, with renovations already under way at the Kendall Sports Complex
