Basketball falls at Union College in teams' first meeting in over 40 years

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union College outscored the Mount Holyoke College basketball team in each quarter and never trailed on the way to a 77-27 non-conference win Tuesday evening.

The host Garnet Chargers (3-3) defeated the visiting Lyons (0-7) for the first time; Mount Holyoke won the teams' only previous meeting in the 1978-79 season.

Thirteen players scored for Union, led by Jelena Perovic with 14 points and Morgan Schultz with 10. Union made only 2-21 three-point attempts (.095) but shot .434 from the field and .900 at the free-throw line. The Garnet Chargers outrebounded the Lyons 46-34 and had a 58-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) scored a team-high eight points for Mount Holyoke and sophomore Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.) added seven. Sophomore Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had a game-high 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. The Lyons shot a season-low .191 from the field and .136 from three-point territory.

Mount Holyoke next plays Thursday at 5pm at New England College.
