Basketball shows more progress in spite of loss at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College basketball team outscored host Springfield College in the second half but couldn't overcome the big deficit created in the first quarter of Springfield's 65-43 NEWMAC victory on Wednesday night.

The score was the closest Mount Holyoke has come to Springfield their past 12 meetings, dating to a 47-39 loss in the 2014-15 season. Springfield is 37-5 all-time against Mount Holyoke, with the Lyons' last win occurring in 2012-13.

The host Pride (11-9, 3-4 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 27-5 lead after one quarter, including the first eight points of the game. Sophomore Emma Zoubok (Somers, N.Y.) made a 3-pointer shortly after entering the game to score the Lyons' first basket and make it 8-3.

The Pride shot 12-for-18 from the floor in the first period, including 3-for-3 efforts by both Angie Czeremcha and Lindsey Laughlan, while Carrie Hess poured in seven points off the bench in the period. Meanwhile Mount Holyoke made 2-of-17 shots from the floor in the quarter.

Aided by 3-pointers from both junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) and sophomore Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.), Mount Holyoke settled in the second quarter and was outscored 14-11 in both of the game's two middle periods, before outscoring Springfield 16-10 in the final stanza.

Mount Holyoke's fourth quarter success was sparked by senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine), who had five points, two rebounds and an assist, and Twomey, who had four points and six boards in the period.

Twomey finished with 12 points, three assists and a game- and career-high 13 rebounds. Goen finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists, and McGonagle added eight points and five boards.

Czeremcha paced the Pride with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while Laughlan and Hess added 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Mount Holyoke will host Emerson on Saturday at 1pm and celebrate Senior Day for its Class of 2025.
