MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke sophomore Sofia Francisco was named NEWMAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, after her outstanding defense helped the Lyons to a 2-0 record last week, as announced by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
Francisco (Boston, Mass.) averaged 6.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots per game, as Mount Holyoke defeated Gordon 70-64 on Wednesday and Bard 67-58 on Saturday. Francisco collected a career-high seven blocks against Bard, the sixth-highest total in a Division III game this season.
Francisco is Mount Holyoke basketball's first recipient of a NEWMAC weekly honor since Xajaah Williams-Flores received the same honor on Feb. 13, 2017.
Francisco and the Lyons will look for their fourth win in a row on Thursday as they host Colby-Sawyer at 12pm.
