Basketball win streak ends at four with loss at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Host Worcester State University pulled away from a close game in the second half to defeat the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 58-34 on Monday night, stopping the Lyons' longest win streak in over 12 years at four games.

The host Lancers (7-7) outscored the Lyons (4-10) 22-8 in the third quarter to open a four-point game at the half into an 18-point gap. Worcester State held Mount Holyoke to 2-of-13 shooting in the fourth quarter to ice the win.

The first half went back and forth with six ties and eight lead changes. The Lyons last led 16-15 on an offensive putback by junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) with 2:31 left in the first half.

Mount Holyoke was held without a 3-pointer, with 0-11 shooting from behind the arc.

Senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) led the Lyons with 11 points. Twomey had a team-high nine rebounds and three steals.

Katie Hurynowicz and Abby St. Martin scored 11 points apiece to lead Worcester State. Ava Lemanski added eight points with six steals.

Mount Holyoke opens NEWMAC play on Saturday at 1pm, hosting Salve Regina University.
