NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Needing a win to secure a berth in the NEWMAC playoffs, Coast Guard clamped down on the Mount Holyoke basketball team defensively and dominated the offensive boards en route to a 64-25 victory to conclude the regular season for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
The Lyons finish with a 4-21 record, 0-11 in NEWMAC play. Their four wins were twice as many as any Mount Holyoke season since 2014-15, with a points per game average (44.4) that also ranks as the program's highest since 2014-15.
Coast Guard (16-9, 5-6 NEWMAC) tied with WPI for seventh place in the final conference standings; the Bears advance to the NEWMAC quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Coast Guard outrebounded Mount Holyoke by a 78-37 margin, including 35 offensive rebounds that served to extend and undermine many solid defensive possessions by the Lyons. Coast Guard was held to .318 field goal shooting and 2-21 (.095) from three-point territory by the Lyons.
Sophomores Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.) and Schuyler Pettibone (Raleigh, N.C.) shared the team scoring lead with six points apiece, with Goen adding two steals and Pettibone pitching in a season-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had three blocked shots.
Mount Holyoke seniors Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.), Amrit Khinda (Van Nuys, Calif.), and Katie Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) all got the starting nod in their final games, and Berano and Khinda scored three points each. Khinda had a career-high four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Kelly Hagerty and Dorothy Stotts scored 11 points apiece for Coast Guard, and Glory Blethen added 10 points with nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and six blocked shots. Hagerty had game-high 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.
Coast Guard rose to 23-17 all-time against Mount Holyoke.
