Wentworth edges basketball in home opener, 57-49

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 57-49 in an evenly played home opener on Wednesday night, squaring the non-conference rivals' all-time series at 3-3.

Wentworth (1-1) took over the lead to stay late in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 (45-31), when Maddy Foster followed a 3-pointer with a layup to make it 45-30 with under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Mount Holyoke (0-2) made it a six-point game with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter, with a three-point play by sophomore Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.), and the score remained 49-43 for three minutes, before a layup by Foster and a 3-pointer by Brianna Carroll boosted the Leopard lead to 54-43 with 3:44 to go.

Gabby Amoddio scored 14 points for Wentworth, and Foster finished with 11. Samantha Jones had five assists and Reagan Madonia had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Leopards, who held a 37-31 advantage on the glass.

Senior Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) was everywhere for the Lyons, with game highs in points (19), rebounds (10) and steals (4), and also committing nine of the Lyons' 33 turnovers in the game. McGonagle shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 6-for-8 in the first half.

Mount Holyoke outshot Wentworth from the field (.404 to .350) and from long distance (.273 to .150). Junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals, and Francisco added a career-high 11 points with six rebounds.

Mount Holyoke next plays at Lesley University, Saturday at 3:30pm. Wentworth will host Elms next Monday at 6pm.
