BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Brianne McGrath tallied a hat trick and Isabelle Fournier added a pair of goals as No. 7 Babson College powered past Mount Holyoke College, 6-1, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey opener for both schools Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Beavers improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the Lyons drop to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.

Laney Reed also scored her first collegiate goal for the Beavers, and Jessica Evans added two assists. Goalkeeper Bayla Furmanek was not forced to make a save and earned the win in the Babson goal.

Sophomore Sophia Guziewicz (Enfield, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season for Mount Holyoke. Classmate Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.) had a busy day in goal and matched her career high with 17 saves.

The Beavers scored three times in a four-minute stretch midway through the opening quarter to take control of the game. Babson outshot the visitors 19-0 in the first half and took a 4-0 lead into the break.

McGrath finished off her hat trick with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, taking a pass from Evans on the right and chipping a shot over the keeper's pads.

The Lyons scored their only goal less than a minute later when Guziewicz pounded home a rebound after a scrum in front of the Beaver goal.

There was no scoring in the final frame but Babson finished with a 27-4 advantage in shots and a 13-4 margin in penalty corners.

Mount Holyoke travels to Regis on Wednesday for a 7:30 non-conference matchup under the lights.
