SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team put forth a valiant effort, but couldn't avoid the loss as No. 14 nationally ranked Amherst opened its season with a 10-0 victory over the host Lyons on Thursday evening at the MHC Turf & Track Complex.

The visiting Mammoths (1-0) got two goals from Jackie D'Alleva, and eight other players added scores. Muffie Mazambani and Sarah Edelson both added assists to their tallies, and Beth Williamson contributed two assists.

Mount Holyoke (0-2) sophomore goalie Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.) turned away 11 shots as she faced 20 shots on goal in her 41 minutes of action between the pipes. Junior Leah Manning (Durham, N.H.) made four more saves and allowed one goal over the final 19 minutes. Amherst outshot Mount Holyoke by a 36-2 margin, including 14-0 in the first quarter as the visitors built a 4-0 lead.

Junior Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) and senior Phoebe Aaronson (Mountain View, Calif.) both recorded defensive saves for Mount Holyoke, giving the Lyons a team total of 17 saves in the game.

The game took place just hours after the newly resurfaced track and field officially opened with a well-attended, enthusiastic ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Jodi Canfield, who is beginning her first year as Lyons Director of Athletics.

Mount Holyoke stays home Saturday to host Thomas College at 1pm.
