SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Annie Wimsatt scored the opening goal of the game and assisted on another score as Smith College defeated the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team 4-0 in a NEWMAC game played under the lights on the MHC Turf Tuesday night.

Smith (6-5, 3-1 NEWMAC) claimed its fourth straight victory and its second in a row against rival Mount Holyoke (3-7, 0-4 NEWMAC). The Pioneers outshot the Lyons by a 22-6 margin and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Smith's first goal came with all zeroes showing on the game clock at the end of the first quarter, on the Pioneers' third penalty corner of the final minute, as Wimsatt redirected a shot by Eva Kinnel past Lyons goalkeeper Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.)

Abbey O'Meara doubled Smith's lead seven minutes later, beating a defender 1-on-1 and carrying 20 yards open into the circle before knocking it past a defenseless Katzenberg.

Smith captain Rachel Mellow scored the third goal three minutes after halftime, after intercepting a Mount Holyoke, passing ahead to Annika Peterson on the left, then getting a return feed from Peterson and knocking a hard shot from in front into the goal past Lyons junior keeper Leah Manning (Durham, N.H.)

The Pioneers added one more goal in the 40th minute, as Smith regained control of the ball after a broken penalty corner play and Wimsatt passed to an open Kaylee Newbanks near the right post for an easy finish and a 4-0 lead for Smith.

Mount Holyoke junior Andie Hardin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made four of the Lyons' seven team saves over the final 17 minutes of play. Katzenberg made one save in 24 minutes and Manning made two saves in 19 minutes of action between the pipes. For Smith, Rory Harper played the full game in goal and notched the shutout without making a save.

Seniors Mollee Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) attempted two shots apiece for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke will host No. 12 nationally ranked MIT in a NEWMAC contest this Saturday at 1pm.
