Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Western New England, 172-88

Springfield, Mass. - February 1, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team won 11 out of 14 events on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons defeated Western New England, 172-88, at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Of the 11 victories, first-years Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas), Erin Schrama (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Caitlyn Richmond (Northampton, Mass.) all came away with a pair each, as Richmond was also on the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams that were victorious.  

Starting with the 200 medley relay, the team of Anais Magner (Ohiwa, New Zealand), Adrienne Corr (San Diego, Calif.), Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya) and Richmond took first overall with a winning time of 2:04.25, while Courtney Dunham (Pawling, N.Y.), Shloka Gidwani (Mumbai, India), Naomi Brown (Bloomington, Ind.) and Gigi Picard (Wilmette, Ill.) were second with a mark of 2:08.67.

Leese then won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:20.89, before Jane Zhang (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) took third overall in the 200 freestyle, producing a mark of 2:26.89. Corr was second in the 50 backstroke, touching the wall in 34.73 seconds, before Richmond emerged victorious in the 50 breaststroke, clocking in at 34.27 seconds. 

Leese continued her impressive day in the 100 butterfly with a victory in 1:07.87, while in the 50 freestyle, Brown cruised to victory, finishing with a time of 27.66 seconds. The Lyons would then get back-to-back wins from Schrama and Richmond, as Schrama took first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.69 seconds, while Richmond finished first in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 1:11.75. 

Junior captain Riley Hicks (Bow, N.H.) won the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:00.10, finishing just ahead of Natalie Burkett (Framingham, Mass.), who was second with a time of 6:08.53 and Picard, who was third with a time of 6:09.55.

Closing out the meet, Mukulu won the 50 butterfly with a time of 29.73 seconds, touching just ahead of Magner, who clocked in at 30.67 seconds, while in the 100 individual medley, Schrama was first with a time of 1:07.01.

Wrapping up with the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Mukulu, Magner, Richmond and Leese was first with a time of 1:51.01, while Picard, Hicks, Brown and Dunham were second with a mark of 1:55.42.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will close out the regular season at Smith College on Saturday, February 8. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
