Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Westfield State, 160-133

Westfield, Mass. - November 16, 2019 - Led by a pair of wins from Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya), Erin Schrama (Taunton, Mass.) and Katie Kolozsvari (Danville, Ind.), the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team won 10 out of the 16 events versus host Westfield State en route to a 160-133 victory on Saturday afternoon at Ely Pool. 

The victory proved to be the 100th dual meet victory for Mount Holyoke College head swimming and diving coach Dave Allen, who is currently in his 22nd season at the helm of the Lyons.

Mukulu won the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly, while Schrama was victorious in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Kolozsvari won both diving boards, producing a mark of 229.50 on the one-meter board and 217.05 on the three-meter board.

Starting off the day with the 200 medley relay, the team of Anais Magner (Ohiwa, New Zealand), Schrama, Naomi Brown (Bloomington, Ind.) and Mukulu combined for a time of 2:01.44 to take second play, while the team of Caitlyn Richmond (Northampton, Mass.), Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas), Adrienne Corr (San Diego, Calif.), and Gigi Picard (Wilmette, Ind.) took third with a time of 2:08.89.

Junior Ashton Bliss (Yorktown, Va.) won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:42.23 for the Lyons' first win of the day. In the 50 backstroke, Magner was runner up with a time of 31.12 seconds, followed by Richmond's third-place time of 31.49 seconds. Picard was second in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 36.84. 

Schrama and Bliss finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 butterfly as Schrama touched in 1:07.10, followed closely by a time of 1:08.19 from Bliss. Mukulu won the 50 freestyle in the next event with a time of 26.24 seconds and Picard was third witha time of 27.90, just befour Magner, who produced a fourth-place finish with a time of 29.43 seconds.

After a break for diving, Schrama came back with a win in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 59.06 seconds, while Riley Hicks (Bow, N.H.) was third with a time of 1:03.18. Magner continued her strong day with a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.02, while in the 100 breaststroke, Leese was second with a time of 1:18.97, just ahead of Picard's time of 1:20.64.

Brown took home the 500 freestyle with a first-place time of 5:44.25, while in the ensuing event, Mukulu won her second title of the day in the 50 butterfly, producing a time of 28.82 seconds.

Following Kolozsvari's second win of the day, Schrama finished second in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:09.70 before the final relay of the day, where Leese, Richmond, Mukulu and Bliss won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.96, beating Westfield State's top team by 10 seconds.

Up next, the Lyons will return to the MHC Natatorium on Saturday, January 23 when they square off with Wellesley at 1 p.m.
