Swimming and Diving Suffers Setback to Simmons in Home Finale

South Hadley, Mass. - January 25, 2020 - Competing for the last time at the MHC Natatorium for the 2019-20 season, the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team fell to visiting Simmons University, 180-120, on Saturday afternoon.

The Lyons kicked off the afternoon with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Anais Magner (Ohiwa, New Zealand), Erin Schrama (Taunton, Mass.), Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya) and Caitlyn Richmond (Northampton, Mass.) combined for a winning time of 1:59.61, just ahead of Simmons' top team which clocked in at 2:00.91.

In the 1000 freestyle, standout junior Ashton Bliss (Yorktown, Va.) notched a third-place finish with a time of 11:39.24, just ahead of Sarah Ratzlaff (Salt Lake City, Utah), who posted a time of 12:25.17. In the 200 freestyle, Mukulu was Mount Holyoke College's top performer with a third-place time of 2:11.47, just ahead of Riley Hicks (Bow, N.H.), who finished in 2:12.07, while in the 100 backstroke, Magner clocked in at 1:05.60 to take third.  

Schrama and Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas) took second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke, as Schrama posted a time of 1:15.50, while Leese clocked in at 1:15.69. In the final two events prior to the one-meter diving competition, Bliss and Naomi Brown (Bloomington, Ind.) took second and third in the 200 butterfly, as Bliss posted a time of 2:24.28 and Brown finished in 2:28.50, while in the 50 freestyle, Richmond was runner up with a time of 26.28 seconds.

Senior Samantha Nemivant (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won the one-meter diving competition, as she produced a nationally-qualifying score of 275.50, while Kathryn Murphy (Fairport, N.Y.) produced a mark of 257.50, earning a spot at the NCAA Division III Regional Championship meet later this season. Katie Kolozsvari (Danville, Ind.) also posted a score of 237.81, which was good for third overall. 

In the first event after diving, Mukulu posted a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle, recording a time of 57.70 seconds, while in the 200 backstroke, Magner was the Lyons top finisher with a time of 2:24.38. Leese was third in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:41.55, while in the 500 freestyle, Bliss was third with a time of 5:47.31. 

The Lyons had a strong finish to the meet, as Brown claimed a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.27, before another diving competition, where Nemivant won the three-meter with a nationally-qualifying score of 265.35. Murphy was second with a 253.10, as she was followed by Kolozsvari, who put together a set that received a 238.00. Following diving, Schrama earned first-place points in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:06.55, before the team of Leese, Magner, Richmond and Bliss took second in the 200 freestyle relay to round out the meet, posting a time of 1:48.22.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Western New England for a 12 p.m. meet on Saturday, February 1.
