CANTON, N.Y. -- Playing in its first Liberty League Women's Squash Tournament, No. 30 nationally ranked Mount Holyoke scored a 6-3 victory over Vassar in the second round of the Liberty League Women's Squash Tournament on Saturday, following the Lyons' 8-1 defeat against Haverford in the opening round earlier in the day.
Mount Holyoke (6-9), a first-year member of the Liberty League, will finish up tournament play with a match against Bard on Sunday at 8:30am.
No. 29 Haverford defeated the Lyons for the second time this season to open the tournament on Saturday morning. Sophomore Katherine Sloop (Houston, Texas) scored the Lyons' point from the No. 9 position with a 8-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-9 win over Nayera Hasan, and sophomore Amelia Arthur (Palo Alto, Calif.) was outlasted in a competitive 3-2 decision at No. 8 by Sarah Kotapka.
With only six players competing, Vassar needed to win at least five points against the Lyons, but the Brewers were thwarted by a gutty Mount Holyoke effort. Sophomore Tina Mei (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defeated Sarah Boucher-Rowe 3-1 (14-12, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8) at the No. 3 position, senior Kyla Core (Philadelphia, Pa.) outfought Sophia Choudhri 3-2 (11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-6) at No. 4, and first-year Lauren McCormick (Coopersburg, Pa.) won another crucial point for the Lyons at No. 6, with a 3-1 (11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 11-7) win over Mea Vesci. Winning by default for Mount Holyoke were Arthur at No. 7, Sloop at No. 8, and first-year Claire Murray (Austin, Texas) at No. 9.
