Field Hockey Suffers Setback to MIT in NEWMAC Play

Cambridge, Mass. - October 9, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team traveled to MIT for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon as the Lyons dropped a 6-0 decision to the Engineers at Jack Barry Field.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-8 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Engineers are now 8-4 on the year and 4-1 against league opponents. MIT held a 24-8 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play and earned 15 penalty corners compared to the Lyons' five.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andie Hardin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got the nod for Mount Holyoke College and made three stops in 37:34 before Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, Md.) came on for 17:21 and posted six saves on 10 shots on goal. Glenna Ricard (Windsor, Vt.) came on for the final 5:05 and posted a save in the loss. For MIT, the combination of Kiely Smiga-McManus, Juliana Strother and Anna Duncan strung together eight stops and kept Mount Holyoke College off the scoreboard for 60 minutes.

MIT scored the lone goal in the first half as Erica Radler posted her fifth goal of the season on a pass from Lydia Patterson. Opening up the third quarter, MIT pushed their lead to a pair when Alice Zehner found the back of the net for the first time this season.

With 4:21 to play in the third quarter, MIT made it 3-0 on a second goal from Radler, before the hosts poured on three more goals in the fourth quarter, including one more from Radler and one each from Paige Forester and Eva Oppenheim to close out the 6-0 victory.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will play host to Springfield College in NEWMAC play on Tuesday, October 19 at 7 p.m.
