Smith Rallies Past Field Hockey, 4-3, in NEWMAC Play

Northampton, Mass. - October 5, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to local rival Smith College, 4-3, on Tuesday evening at the Smith Turf Field, as the Pioneers used two goals in the fourth quarter to prevail over the Lyons in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-6 overall and 1-3 in league play, while Smith improves to 4-7 on the year and 2-2 against conference opponents.

First-year goalkeeper Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, Md.) put forth another impressive performance for Mount Holyoke, producing 10 saves, while her counterpart, Channy Cornell registered four saves in the victory. Smith held an 18-12 advantage in shots over 60 minutes of play and were awareded 12 penalty corners to the Lyons' 10.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Mount Holyoke College got on the board first as the Lyons earned a penalty corner with three seconds remaining in the frame. Mollee Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) sent in the penalty corner and it eventually ended with a goal from senior Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.), who found the back of the net for the first time this season to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead after one.

Mount Holyoke College kept the pedal down and earned a pair of penalty corners to begin the second quarter, and both Baldwin and Malboeuf generated shots on cage, but Cornell kept the Lyons at bay and the score at 1-0. With 5:13 to play in the first half, Smith evened the score at one apiece when Tatum Galuski finished a play that was set up by Grace Moorhead. The game would remain tied heading into the halftime break.

Opening up the third quarter, Smith had a pair of shots on goal that were stopped by Katzenberg, before the Lyons converted at the other end of the field as Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.) produced her fourth goal of the season following a loose-ball play started on a shot from Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.). The Lyons then quickly doubled their lead on a goal from Gracie Wilkinson (Amherst, Mass.), who notched her first-career goal at Mount Holyoke College with 5:08 to play in the quarter.

Smith pulled back to within one right before the third intermission as Karlie Guimond potted one with 13 seconds on the clock. From there, Smith would add two more goals in the fourth quarter to prevail over Mount Holyoke, 4-3.

Mount Holyoke College will now turn their attention to Western New England, as the Lyons will travel to take on the Golden Bears on Thursday, October 7 at 7 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
