Wesleyan Defeats Field Hockey in Lyons' Home Opener

South Hadley, Mass. - September 15, 2021 - Despite a second-half goal from senior midfielder Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.), the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to visiting Wesleyan University, 7-1, at the MHC Turf and Track Complex on Wednesday evening during the Lyons home opener for the 2021 season.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 1-3 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 2-1 overall. Robb's strike was the third of the season for the Neuroscience and Behavior major, all of which have come in the last two contests for Mount Holyoke College.

Wesleyan held a 30-10 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while the Cardinals were also granted 10 penalty corners compared to the Lyons' seven.

In net for the Lyons, first-year Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, Md.) got the nod and played 25:25 before being relieved by Leah Manning (Durham, N.H.), who played the last 34:25. Each keeper made three saves in the setback. For the Cardinals, Caitlin Grant picked up her second win of the year and made four stops to preserve the victory.

Kenzie Kelly got Wesleyan on the board just 5:10 into the contest when she took advantage of a loose ball in front of the Mount Holyoke net that was the product of great work from Colleen Carrigan, who received an assist on the contest-opening tally. Just 2:20 later, Helen Deretchin picked up an unassisted goal as the first-year connected from deep to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Wesleyan tacked on two more in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 4-0 lead. With 10:01 to play in the half, Ava Galdenzi scored on an assist from Diana Schwarz before Annabel Cincotta deflected a centering pass from Olivia Baglieri into the back of the net with 4:35 on the clock.

After Schwarz added the Cardinals' fifth goal just 5:10 into the second half, Mount Holyoke answered when Phoebe Aaronson (Mountain View, Calif.) sent a long pass in to Robb, who turned and fired a shot past Grant to cut the Lyons' deficit to four.

From there, Schwarz scored her second and third goals of the contest as Wesleyan secured the six-goal victory.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 18 when the Lyons play host to No. 12 Babson College at 12 p.m.
