Track team opens outdoor season with several PRs at rainy Wesleyan invitational

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The outdoor season for Mount Holyoke track and field began under unfortunate conditions with heavy rain Saturday at Wesleyan University. But the Lyons, though not yet competing with a full team, showed they're ready for a strong campaign with several personal-record marks set at the non-scoring Elmer Swanson Classic.

Junior Aria Mallare (Chicago, Ill.) ran a personal-record time of 13.16 seconds in the 100 meters, third fastest in a field of 23 sprinters. She also led all five competitors in the high jump with a top effort of 1.47 meters (4'9.75") and long jumped 4.65 meters (15'3.25").

More highlights for the Lyons included:

  • Junior Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) ran a personal-best time of 5:01.46 in the 1500 meters, sixth-fastest out of 29 runners.
  • Junior Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) placed third in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:58.38.
  • In the 3000 meters, senior Bridget Hall (Arlington, Mass.) led three Lyons in ninth place among 21 competitors with a time of 11:21.81. Junior Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) was 10th at 11:26.10 and sophomore Katie Earle (East Kingston, N.H.) was 12th at 11:46.20.
  • First-year Zivaishe Jaravaza (Harare, Zimbabwe) ran a time of 1:09.91 in the 400 meters and 31.40 seconds in the 200.
  • Sophomore Em Tetzlaff (Bath, Maine) was 11th out of 24 competitors in the hammer throw at 27.32 meters (89'7").
  • Junior Lize Brown (New London, Conn.) was 11th out of 20 competitors in the javelin, at 24.35 meters (79'11").

Mount Holyoke will compete at the Tufts Snowflake Classic next Saturday in Medford, Mass.
