WORCESTER, Mass. -- Clark University outlasted Mount Holyoke College 28-26 in the second set and went on to defeat the Lyons in straight sets (25-16, 28-26, 25-16) in NEWMAC women's volleyball on Tuesday night.
Mount Holyoke (13-12, 2-8 NEWMAC) will host Wellesley College Saturday at 1pm in the Lyons' season finale.
After dropping the first set decisively to the Cougars, the Lyons broke out of a 5-5 tie early in the second set to grab a 12-7 lead, with three kills by junior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) and two by senior Lucie Berclaz (Vaud, Switzerland), plus one apiece by junior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) and first-year Olivia Murray (Miami, Fla.).
Trailing 16-11, Clark went on a 10-2 run to seize a 21-18 lead. The Lyons took five of the next six points for a 23-22 lead, and the set was tied at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, and 26-26 before the Cougars got kills from Scherrer del Llano and Victoria Pastor to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Clark got out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and never trailed, expanding it to 19-10 after the Lyons had closed the gap to 9-8.
Barton finished with a match-high 13 kills to go with eight digs, and Berclaz added 10 kills and 10 digs in her sixth double-double of the season. Rimando had five kills and junior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) passed out 30 assists.
Clark (13-9, 6-4 NEWMAC), sitting in sixth place in the conference, plays at Coast Guard on Saturday before the NEWMAC Tournament begins next week.
