Volleyball sweeps WPI to capture second NEWMAC win

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke College senior captain Lucie Berclaz had 12 kills and served eight aces to lead the Lyons to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-17) victory over the WPI Engineers on Tuesday night.

Mount Holyoke (11-8, 2-6 NEWMAC) defeated WPI for the first time since 2017, breaking a string of five straight defeats. The Lyons are now 21-18 all-time against the Engineers. Mount Holyoke's last 3-0 victory against WPI occurred in 2007.

The Lyons now have two conference wins for the first time since 2011.

WPI (5-15, 0-8 NEWMAC) lost its 11th straight match.

Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) was a model of efficiency, getting 12 kills with just two errors on 28 swings for a .357 attack percentage. She aced eight of her 16 serves, leading Mount Holyoke with 20 points.

Junior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had 12 kills on 32 attempts (.250) and 11 digs for her seventh double-double this season, while sophomore Katie Frank (Prairieville, La.) had a season-high 10 kills to go with two aces. First-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) posted a season-high six kills on eight attempts (.750).

Junior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 32 assists and sophomore Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a team-high 18 digs.

Anastasia Kelnik led WPI with seven kills and two blocks. Victoria Escuer had a team-high 18 digs.

Berclaz had six of her aces in the first set, including the final three points of the frame, and also six kills on nine attempts (.667), as Mount Holyoke took a 1-0 lead with ease.

The Lyons led the second set from 5-4 onward, and Berclaz again scored the set point with a kill. Mount Holyoke hit .344 as a team in the set.

Frank and Barton tallied five kills apiece in the third and final set and McFadden added three. The Lyons led from 3-2 on, building leads of 7-2, 13-8, and 21-15. An ace by Staples made it 23-16 in Mount Holyoke's favor, and the Lyons clinched the win with a kill by Frank.

Mount Holyoke will host Bay Path in a non-conference match on Friday at 6pm. WPI will host Connecticut College in a non-conference match Saturday at 11am.
