NEW LONDON, N.H. -- The Coast Guard Academy held the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team at bay Tuesday night in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-22) NEWMAC victory for the host Bears, despite a match-high 13 kills from Lyons junior Madeline Barton.
Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) added a team-high 16 digs, while senior Lucie Berclaz (Vaud, Switzerland) had nine kills and 13 digs for Mount Holyoke (11-10, 2-7 NEWMAC).
Shannon Shaw had 11 kills and 11 digs for Coast Guard (17-7, 6-3 NEWMAC), while Kaela France had a match-high 23 digs.
The Bears trailed the Lyons 7-0 in the first set before tying the score at 16-16, then taking their first lead at 21-20 en route to the 25-21 set win.
Coast Guard led the entire second set en route to a 25-15 victory. The third set appeared to be heading in a similar direction, with Coast Guard jumping out to an early 11-2 lead, but the Lyons clawed back into the set.
At 22-17, they scored four consecutive points to cut the CGA lead to just one, with senior Dinanyelin Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) serving an ace between a pair of kills by Barton, before finally making an error to bring the Bears lead back to two. After a final kill by Barton, the Bears were able to close out a 25-22 set victory.
Mount Holyoke hosts Keene State, along with a costume party for fans, starting at 7pm on Oct. 31.
