SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team gave neighboring Amherst College a battle in the Lyons' home opener on Tuesday night, but the visiting Mammoths prevailed 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20) after winning a 26-24 tiebreaking third set.
Amherst (4-0) attacked at a .274 percentage to .132 for Mount Holyoke (3-1) in the teams' first matchup since 2012.
Charlotte Rasmussen had 15 kills and three errors on 32 attempts (.375) for the Mammoths, while Kinsey Cronin had 12 kills with three errors on 23 attempts (.391), including the clinching point of the night.
Sofia Camilo and Allie McLaughlin had six kills apiece, Renee Liou had four kills in addition to 43 assists on the night, and Lizzie Papalia had a match-high 22 digs.
Mount Holyoke junior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had 16 kills, nine digs and five aces, while junior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) added a season-high 12 kills and four aces. Junior
Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied 30 assists to go with eight digs.
Sophomore Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a team-high 20 digs for the Lyons.
Mount Holyoke remains home Thursday at 7pm as the Lyons host Western New England University.
