BOSTON -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team stayed alive with a 30-28 win in the third set, but host Emerson College retook control in the fourth set to win 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 28-30, 25-14) Tuesday night in a NEWMAC match at Brown & Plofker Gym.
Amelia Combs and Parker Cummings had 20 kills apiece for Emerson (9-7, 2-1 NEWMAC), which hit at a .266 rate as a team compared to .032 for Mount Holyoke (8-5, 0-3 NEWMAC).
Senior Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) had a team-high 12 kills to go with 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Juniors Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) and Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) added seven and six kills apiece, respectively.
Sophomore Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) posted 24 digs, and junior Amelia Ringor (Lafayette, Ind.) added 16 digs with four aces. Junior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) doled out 24 assists and had 12 digs as well.
Mount Holyoke rallied from a seven-point deficit in the third set, including a run of eight straight points with Ringor serving that featured three kills by Rimando. With the set tied at 28-28, a pair of Emerson errors extended the match to a fourth set with the hosts leading 2-1.
Emerson got five kills from Cummings in the fourth set and nine digs by Caroline Davis to seal the victory.
Mount Holyoke will host No. 5 nationally ranked MIT on Saturday at noon.
