NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Coast Guard Academy scored the game's first 20 points and had all 13 of its players score as the host Bears defeated the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 89-29 on Wednesday night.

Coast Guard rose to 11-9 on the season and 3-2 in NEWMAC play with its third straight victory, while Mount Holyoke dropped to 2-19 and stayed winless in the conference at 0-6.

Sophomore captain Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) led the Lyons in scoring for the third straight game, with 10 points. Junior Isabel Cordes (Yorktown, Va.) added six points and five rebounds. First-year Kendall Maurer (Orinda, Calif.) grabbed eight rebounds and scored five points, and first-year Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) hit double digits in rebounding for the third straight game, tying her season best with 11 boards.

Kelly Hagerty was the only Bear to hit double figures in scoring, with 16 points off the bench. Abbey Guidry had a team-high 10 rebounds with six points off the bench. Kira Wood led Coast Guard starters with nine points and Jacqueline Ward dished out five assists.

Coast Guard held Mount Holyoke scoreless for the first seven minutes of the game, building a 20-point lead in the meantime, before a jump shot by Cordes put the Lyons on the board. But Coast Guard scored 10 unanswered points after that, continuing into the second quarter, for a 30-2 lead before a 3-pointer by Berano. Eight players scored in the opening quarter for the Bears, led by Hagerty's eight points and Julia Mann's five.

Coast Guard continued to add to its lead for a 50-8 advantage at halftime and a 74-16 edge after three quarters.

Mount Holyoke improved its fortunes in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points to Coast Guard's 15. Berano made a three to start off the scoring in the quarter, and Maurer made a jump shot before White made a jumper and assisted on a jumper by junior Teal Howle (Florence, S.C.). Howle and White scored additional hoops before the game expired.

The Lyons travel to Clark University this Saturday for a NEWMAC game tipping off at 3pm.
