Berano scores 14 as shorthanded Lyons fall to No. 9 Babson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Thirteen players scored for No. 9 nationally ranked Babson College as the Beavers won 103-25 at Mount Holyoke College in a NEWMAC game Wednesday night at Howard Gymnasium.

The Beavers rose to 16-2 overall and 3-0 in NEWMAC play with the win. Mount Holyoke dropped to 2-17 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Chloe Perreault had 19 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots in 18 minutes off the bench to lead the Beavers in all three categories. Fellow reserve Emily Flynn added 13 points and five rebounds. Samantha Smith led Babson starters with 12 points, and Megan Bauman added six points and six assists.

With several key rotation players out with illness or injury, Mount Holyoke sophomore captain Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) led the Lyons with 14 points. First-year Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) scored four points and grabbed a game- and season-high 10 rebounds.

Babson scored the game's first 22 points, before Berano put Mount Holyoke on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Smith scored eight points in the opening quarter and Rachel McMenemy added six, as the Beavers shot 55.0% (11-20) from the field in the quarter while holding the Lyons to 7.1% (1-14), for a 24-3 lead.

Babson continued to coast through the second quarter, outscoring Mount Holyoke 29-8 en route to a 51-11 halftime lead. Perreault amassed 10 points and five rebounds in the period, and Camilla Silk added seven points. For Mount Holyoke, Berano buried two more 3-pointers in the period and had nine of the Lyons' 11 points at intermission.

The second half resembled the first half, with Babson outscoring Mount Holyoke 26-9 in the third quarter and 24-5 in the fourth quarter. Flynn poured in 11 points in the third quarter, making 4-5 shots from the field and 3-3 from three-point territory. Perreault dominated the fourth quarter with nine points and nine rebounds.

The last time the two teams met was the last time Mount Holyoke allowed over 100 points, a 104-33 loss at Babson a season ago.

Babson shot 42-89 (.472) from the floor and 5-19 (.263) from three, while Mount Holyoke was held to 10-59 shooting from the floor (.169) and 5-32 (.156) from three. The Beavers outrebounded the Lyons 65-35 and had a 30-9 advantage in turnovers.

Both teams return to NEWMAC play this Saturday at 1pm, with Babson at Springfield and No. 5 Smith visiting Mount Holyoke.
