FRANKLIN, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College basketball team turned the tables on Dean College with a 19-3 second quarter, shrugging off a 17-6 deficit through one period, and the Lyons held off the host Bulldogs for a 51-43 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Holyoke (1-3) picked up its first win since December 2021 and kept Dean (0-3) winless this season.

First-year Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) and sophomore captain Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) combined for 33 points to pace the Lyons. Twomey scored a team-high 17 points and added nine rebounds and four steals.

"Consistent confidence and composure kept us steady all night," said Berano. "We listened to each other and made necessary adjustments to maintain our lead. At the end of the day, it came down to remaining calm and playing our game."

Viau scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the first quarter to stake Dean to its big early lead.

Berano made a jump shot to start the second quarter, and Twomey hit a putback after a steal by junior Nicole Lutalo (Kampala, Uganda), cutting the deficit to 17-10. Then a barrage of three 3-pointers in a row, all assisted by Berano, moved the Lyons into the lead. Back-to-back threes by Twomey and junior Emily Mock (Bangor, Maine) tied the game at 18-18 with 6:09 left in the quarter, and Mock drained a second three with 5:34 to go for a 21-18 Mount Holyoke lead. Four points by sophomore Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) capped the half with Mount Holyoke leading 25-20.

Trailing Mount Holyoke 35-32 after three quarters, Dean came within two points of Mount Holyoke twice over the final four minutes of the game. The Lyons clung to a 43-41 advantage with 2:24 to go, after jumpers by Dean's Tori Viau and Amani Pressley. But Mount Holyoke made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 98 seconds of the game to ice the victory.

Tori Andrewski (14 rebounds) and Cat Thomas (11 rebounds) helped Dean to a 51-48 edge on the boards. Thirteen Mount Holyoke steals helped the Lyons to a 27-21 advantage in turnovers committed.

Lutalo corralled 10 rebounds, her second straight game in double digits on the boards. McGonagle contributed seven points, six rebounds and two steals.

Dean shot slightly better than Mount Holyoke from the field, but the Bulldogs were just 1-12 from three (.083) and 4-13 (.308) at the free-throw line. Mount Holyoke made 5-27 from three (.185) and 16-26 at the line (.615), including 14-22 (.636) in the fourth quarter.

Mount Holyoke will host Westfield State Tuesday at 7pm.
