Basketball falls 79-46 to Westfield State at home

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Westfield State University dominated the first half, forcing 30 turnovers en route to a 50-16 halftime lead, and the visiting Owls cruised to a 79-46 non-conference victory over the Mount Holyoke College basketball team Tuesday night in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

Unable to withstand Westfield State's (5-1) full-court defensive pressure, Mount Holyoke (1-4) committed 50 turnovers in the game as Westfield State tallied 32 steals. The Owls outrebounded the Lyons 59-38 and attempted 100 field goals, making 33 (.330), while Mount Holyoke shot 16-42 from the field (.381).

Olivia Hadla scored a game-high 13 points for Westfield State to go with four assists and four steals. Maddie Pond added 11 points and five steals off the bench. Eleven Owls tallied steals, led by Hannah Sheldon's six.

Sophomore Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) scored 12 points and grabbed a game- and career-high 13 rebounds for Mount Holyoke while dishing out five assists. First-year Libby Harris (Foxborough, Mass.) had six points and six assists, and junior Emily Mock (Bangor, Maine) scored nine points off the bench.

Mount Holyoke fared reasonably well early on, trailing 16-12 halfway through the first period after a 3-pointer by McGonagle and a jumper by sophomore Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.). Hadla answered with a three and a steal, and Westfield State finished the period with nine unanswered points while the Lyons commited seven turnovers.

The Owls continued to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Lyons 25-4 in the period to end the half on a 34-4 run. Jess Gardner scored seven points in the second quarter and Sheldon tallied five points and four steals in the period.

Westfield State's defensive pressure relented in the second half, and Mount Holyoke kept the deficit stable, tying Westfield State 17-17 in the third quarter and outscoring the visitors 13-12 in the fourth quarter.

Mount Holyoke next plays at Lesley University on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7pm; Westfield State plays at New England College on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 5:30pm.
