Mariners sail past balanced basketball team

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Sam McKenna scored a game-high 17 points, including 14 in the third quarter, and Yasmine Santos added 15 points and 12 rebounds as Mitchell College defeated Mount Holyoke 84-50 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

The visiting Mariners (6-7) won their third game in a row by exerting defensive pressure throughout the game, with 24 steals leading to a 42-15 advantage in turnovers and a 36-8 edge in points off turnovers.

Mount Holyoke (1-13) had four players score in double figures for the first time this season, highlighted by 11 points off the bench from first-years Kendall Maurer (Orinda, Calif.) and Libby Harris (Foxborough, Mass.) -- a season-high for Maurer.

Sophomore Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) also scored 11 points and first-year Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) added 10 points. First-year Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) scored the first basket of the game and gathered a team-high seven rebounds.

Mitchell led 14-7 after one quarter and 38-20 at the half before the Mariners exploded for 31 points in the third quarter, with McKenna shooting 5-11 in the period including 4-8 from deep.

Dede Stevenson contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and a game-high six steals and four assists for Mitchell, while Jamya Beddoe added 10 points and four steals off the bench.

Mount Holyoke trailed 20-12 early in the second quarter, before Maurer and Harris made consecutive 3-pointers to draw the Lyons within two points (20-18). Mitchell then outscored Mount Holyoke 18-2 over the final five minutes of the half, with Leilani McClellan, Stevenson and Santos accounting for all of the Mariners' points in the decisive stretch.

Mount Holyoke will next play on Wednesday Jan. 11 at 6pm at home against Bard College. Mitchell plays at Coast Guard on Monday at 7pm.
