SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced its All-Academic Teams as well as its Scholar Athletes for the 2013-14 season. Six members of the Lyons squad were named Scholar-Athletes. In addition, the program picked up All-Academic Team accolades.
As a team, the Lyons, who are led by 21st-year head coach Aldo Santiago, were recognized for the 11th straight season after posting a grade point average of 3.39. In total, it was the 12th time in the last 13 years that the team has earned All-Academic honors.
Individually, six student-athletes were named 2014 Scholar-Athletes by the organization including sophomore Michelle Cai, junior Sarah Anischik and seniors Kelsey Brower, AnnElizabeth Konkel, Eman Malik and Maya Sayarath.
For Konkel and Sayarath, it marked their fourth straight Scholar-Athlete honors. It is also the third straight year for Anischik and the second for Cai.
The Lyons posted an 11-9 record during the 2013-14 campaign, going 4-4 in NEWMAC play. Mount Holyoke advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament for the eighth consecutive season. Highlighting the year was senior co-captain Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School), who posted a 15-4 overall record in singles action, including a 7-1 mark during NEWMAC play. Her only loss came against eventual conference-champion, MIT.
Also posting solid contributions for the Lyons was sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School), who posted a 15-6 record in singles, including a 6-2 record during conference play. MHC went on to finish third at the Seven Sisters Championship with both Malik and fellow senior and co-captain AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) earning All-Tournament Team distinction.
In order to earn Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter recipient, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their institution for at least two semesters. To qualify as an All-Academic Team, a program must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20.
