BABSON PARK, Mass.—The fourth-seeded Babson College women's tennis team swept three doubles matches and cruised to three straight-set wins in singles action to earn a 6-0 victory over fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal match on Wednesday afternoon at Farwell Courts.
With the win the Beavers, who are now 9-5 on the year, advance to the conference semifinals for the fourth straight season, while the Lyons see their fall season come to an end at 6-6.
Junior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) and first-year Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) got Babson on the board with an 8-0 triumph at number one doubles. Senior Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and junior Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) earned the Beavers' second point with an 8-3 win over junior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn.) and first-year Whitney Schott (Forest Hills, N.Y.) at third doubles. Junior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and sophomore Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory at number two doubles over the Lyons' pairing of seniors Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan) and Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J.).
Freeman earned her second point of the day at number one singles, making quick work of Mount Holyoke senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), 6-0, 6-0. Weick and Paolino then finished off their matches almost simultaneously to close out the match. Weick topped Anischik 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles while Paolino topped Brower 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles.
At the time of completion, there were still three singles matches that remained unfinished. Lyons' sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) led Whitaker 5-4 in the first set at number two, Malik took the first set from Ferraro, winning 7-5 in a tie-break at fourth singles, and first-year Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash.) was leading Fischer 6-2, 0-1 at number six singles.
Babson will return to action on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. when it faces top-seeded MIT (9-0) in the first NEWMAC semifinal match of the day at Wellesley College.
