Tennis Concludes Action at NEWITT Tournament

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team saw five pairs in action on Saturday at the 2013 NEWITT Tournament at the MHC Tennis Courts. The Lyons were paced by senior Maya Sayarath and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz, who advanced to the Second Round Quarterfinals of the B Draw before falling to a duo from Tufts. 

The second position duo of Sayarath and Holloschutz played against Tufts' Becca Kimmel and Catherine Worley in doubles to open up action, but fell by a tough fought 9-8 (7-5) margin. Sayarath could not hold Kimmel at bay, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory, but Holloschutz was victorious by a 6-3, 7-5 margin.

In the fourth position, Zehra Khan and Whitney Schott faced off against Wesleyan's Wesleyan's Grace Smith and Kiley Robbins, falling in doubles action by an 8-5 margin. Schott then dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Smith, while Kahn fell to Robbins by a 6-2, 6-1 score. The Cardinals pair was the top-seeded team in the B draw.

Mount Holyoke's AnnElizabeth Konkel and Eman Malik squared off against Simmons' Maragaret Teague and Meghan Cokely, shouldering an 8-0 loss in doubles. Konkel then dropped a heartbreaker to Teague, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7), while Malik lost to Cokely, 6-3, 6-3.

Sarah Anischik and Kelsey Brower played thirds for the Lyons in the B draw consolation, falling 8-4 against Brandeis' Francesa DiOrio and Hannah Marion. Anischik came up the winner in singles action, defeating DiOrio by a 7-5, 6-1 margin, but Brower was unable to hold off Marion, who won 6-0, 6-0.

Wrapping up the day's action was the fifth duo in the B draw consolation of Mira Murali and Michelle Cai, who were defeated by Babson's Sarah Whitaker and Sarah Calmus in doubles, 8-3. Murali then fell to Whitaker, 6-4, 6-2 while Cai shouldered a tough 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 loss to Calmas.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Babson for the Quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Tournament. That match, which pits the fourth-seeded Beavers against the fifth-seeded Lyons, begins at 3pm.
