Tennis Falls to Wheaton in NEWMAC Opener

 SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Powered by a dominant effort in doubles and wins in five of six singles, the Wheaton College tennis team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 8-1 in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. With the win, Wheaton improves to 3-0, while MHC is now 2-2 on the young season.

The visiting Lyons set the tone early as junior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and senior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) posted an 8-1 win in the first flight against MHC senior captains AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) and Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School).

Second doubles saw senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and first year Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) defeat senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School), 8-5.

In the third doubles it was senior Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and senior Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) who prevailed by an 8-2 margin against senior Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and junior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland).

Singles action saw Marlowe defeat Konkel, 6-0, 6-0 in the first flight and Cooke downed Sayarath, 6-0, 6-1 at seconds. Bell and Holloschutz played a tough one in the third flight as Bell pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win, but Brazell beat Anischik, 6-1, 6-0 to maintain the Wheaton lead.

Malik picked up the lone victory for Mount Holyoke in the fifth flight as she defeated Crom by a 6-3, 6-1 margin, but sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) beat Brower in the sixth flight, 6-3, 6-1 to complete the victory.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it travels to NEWMAC-newcomer Emerson for a 1pm contest. Wheaton is also in conference action on Saturday at Springfield at 1pm.
