Tennis Posts 8-1 Victory Over UMass-Boston in Home Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team swept doubles action and took five out of six singles matches to defeated the University of Massachusetts-Boston by an 8-1 margin on Saturday. With the victory, the Lyons are off to a 1-0 start, while the Beacons slip to 1-1 overall.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the match after sweeping doubles action. The first team, which featured senior captains AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) and Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School), opened with a strong 8-2 victory over Beacons' senior Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and first year Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass./Braintree).

The second flight pairing of sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) then notched an 8-1 victory over sophomore Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France/International School of Hyderabad) and senior Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional).

Rounding out the doubles action was junior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) and senior Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional), who recorded an 8-5 win over first year Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) and Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass./SABIS International Charter).

Singles action continued to favor the Lyons as the second through sixth flights claimed victory. Muntasser grabbed the Beacons lone win as she posted a 6-2, 1-6, (10-6) win over Konkel in the first flight.

Sayarath opened her senior campaign with a second flight victory (6-0, 6-2) against Kloczewiak, followed by Holloschutz with a straight set win (6-0, 6-0) against Counts. Anischik was the fourth flight winner by a 6-0, 6-0 score over sophomore Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey/Burncoat High School), while Malik downed Castelli (6-1, 6-1) and Brower defeated Shea (6-0, 6-0) to round out the fifth and sixth flights.

The Lyons return to the court on Monday when they travel to Simmons for a 12pm contest. UMass-Boston is back in action on Tuesday with a 3pm home contest against Colby-Sawyer.
