Tennis Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Led by a dominant performance up and down the lineup, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) women's tennis team posted a 9-0 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. With the victory, the Engineers move to 4-0 overall (4-0 in conference), while the Lyons slip to 3-4 and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

The visiting Engineers were dominant right from the start, opening up a 3-0 lead after wins in all three doubles. Seniors Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas/Gregory-Portland) and Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) posted an 8-3 win in the first flight against MHC senior captains AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) and Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School).

In second doubles, sophomore Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Penninsula) and first year Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) defeated the Lyons team of senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) by an 8-3 margin.

Junior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and first year Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif./University) closed out the doubles with an 8-0 win over senior Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and junior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland).

Singles action saw Quisenberry roll to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Konkel in the first flight, while Sayarath dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Kohrs in the second. Third flight saw a 6-4, 6-1 win by Tam over Holloschutz and Anischik fell to Lai by a 6-2, 6-0 margin in fourth singles.

Malik saw her undefeated streak (6-0) snapped in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to first year Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista), while junior Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) defeated Brower, 6-0, 6-1 in the sixth flight.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts NEWMAC-rival Smith at 5pm. MIT is also in action on Tuesday at Babson for a 3:30pm conference match.
