Tennis Shoulders Loss in Spring Opener to Bates

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Lyons saw an outstanding effort, but it wasn't enough as Bates College picked up a 7-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College at the MHC Field House on Saturday. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-1 overall, while the Lyons, who were opening their spring schedule, dip to 6-7 on the season.

MHC got wins from senior captain Eman Malik and junior Sarah Anischik in today's play. Both were solid victories as Malik posted a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fifth flight against Bates' sophomore Eleanor Hough.

Anischik wrapped up the match with a hard-fought effort in the fourth flight against first year Kate Rosenthal. After opening with a 7-5 victory, Anischik suffered a 6-7 (5-7) loss in the second set, sending the match to a super tiebreaker. In the end, MHC prevailed as Anischik gutted out a 10-8 win to take the match.

The Lyons also saw strong efforts in doubles action. In the first flight, senior captain AnnElizabeth Konkel and Malik took on Bates' junior Elena Madzhukova and first year Elizabeth Erbafina. The Bobcats duo pulled out an 8-5 win.

In the third flight, Anischik teamed up with first year Alexa Colas against Bates' sophomore Emma Blakeley and Hough. Despite solid pressure, the Lyons fell by an 8-4 margin.
