Soccer Closes Out 2010 Campaign With 4-0 Loss at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 29, 2010) – Senior forward Brittany Collins recorded a pair of goals, as the Springfield College women's soccer team downed Mount Holyoke College 4-0 this evening at Brock-Affleck Field. With the win, the Pride clinched the top seed in next week's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament. It was the first time in program history that they won the regular season title outright.

The Lyons closed out their 2010 campaign with an overall record of 1-14-1 and a league mark of 1-7-1. After tying Smith College 1-1 in their NEWMAC opener on September 18, they downed the Coast Guard Academy 2-1 on October 5.

Both sides went scoreless until the 28:23 mark, when sophomore forward Erica Donnelly took a cross from junior midfielder Jenelle Jahoda and flicked a shot past Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Elaine Harvey.

Collins netted her first goal of the night just 3:36 later to extend Springfield's cushion to 2-0. After receiving a pass from junior forward Amber Thornton, she snuck a shot under the crossbar from 20 yards out.

The forward then pushed the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted tally in the 61st minute.

Springfield (13-4-0, 8-1-0 NEWMAC) closed out the scoring in the 69th minute, when Thornton collected a cross from Donnelly in the middle of the box and fired a shot into the right corner.

The Pride finished with overwhelming advantages in both shots (41-2) and corner kicks (5-1). Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Greenstein turned away a pair of shots in the first half before giving way to junior Hanna MacDougall, who didn't face a shot after the break.

Mount Holyoke received an outstanding effort from Harvey, who piled up a season best 18 saves in her final collegiate contest.

Both of the Lyons shots came from senior forward Jacquelyn Archibald.
