THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke kicks off a three match homestand versus the Coast Guard Academy Tuesday afternoon (4:30 p.m.) at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. In 10 previous meetings between the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes, each side has won five times. The Lyons have racked up four straight wins over the Bears, including a 9-2 triumph last fall. Their nine goals in the contest were their most since the 1984 season, when they blanked Colby-Sawyer College 11-0. Match Program
THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (0-7-1, 0-2-1 NEWMAC) has struggled out of the gate, falling in seven of its first eight contests. With goalkeeper Elaine Harvey leading the way, the Lyons finished in a 1-1 deadlock with Smith College in their NEWMAC opener on September 18. Harvey turned in a terrific effort, stopping 12 shots. Two of those came in overtime. Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 1-0 edge at the 40:44 mark of the contest, when forward Margaret Hanmer scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from midfielder Veronica Farmer. Hanmer and Farmer have accounted for 12 and 13 shots, respectively, thus far this season. Meanwhile, Harvey has amassed 77 saves in 671 minutes played. Last season, Mount Holyoke posted four wins and qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament for the second straight time.
THE BEARS: Coast Guard (5-4-0, 1-2-0 NEWMAC) has picked up wins over Albertus Magnus College (1-0), SUNY Maritime (6-0), Mitchell College (3-0), the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (4-0) and Clark University thus far this season. With their win over Clark on Saturday, the Bears snapped a 16 match losing streak in matches against NEWMAC opponents. They had won just one of their last 40 league tilts dating back to the 2005 season. Forward Shannah Shelton recorded the lone goal in the contest. Over the course of the season, she has delivered three goals and two assists to pace Coast Guard. Fellow forward Angela Ingram has registered three goals and a helper, while midfielder Rachel Deschene has chipped in with two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Mary Mills has posted a goals against average of 1.38 in 779 minutes played.
NEXT UP: Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules in front of their home crowds on Saturday. Mount Holyoke will host Babson College at 1:00 p.m., while Coast Guard will entertain Wellesley College at noon.
